Thirty Years of Tears John Hiatt
From the 1990 A&M Records release Stolen Moments
Transcribed by Jim O'Neill (thunderbird2k1@hotmail.com)
A great song...and by no coincidence transcribed on my 30th birthday. This is a
waltz (¾ time), listen to the CD for timing and the chord pattern. In the intro
and between lines of the verse for the chord change from G to Cadd9, play the
G (320033), lift your first two fingers and strum the A7sus4(x00033), then hammer
the 1st and 2nd fingers to the Cadd9(x32033).

G Em7 Cadd9 G Riff 1
Is this a place I can rest my poor head,
G Em7 Cadd9 G Riff 1
To gather my thoughts in sweet si......lence?
G Em7 Cadd9 G Riff 1
Is this a place where the feelings aren't dead,
From an [G]overex[Em7]posure to [Dsus2]violence?
And [Dsus4/A]is this a [G5/B]place I can [Cadd9]slowly [G5/B]face
The only [Dsus4/A]one I [G5/B]truly can [Cadd9]know?
These are [G]tears from a [Cadd9]long time a[G]go,
[Cadd9]I've got these [G]tears from a [Cadd9]long time a[G]go,
and [Cadd9]I need to [G]cry [D]thirty [Dsus4]years [D]or [Em7]so.
[G]These are [Cadd9]tears from a [D]long [Dsus4]time [G]ago.
[Cadd9] [G5/B] [Dsus4/A]
G Em7 Cadd9 G Riff 1
"Oh, Darling, Oh, darling" you say unto me,
G Em7 Cadd9 G Riff 1
"Oh, Where have you been all my life...time?"
G Em7 Cadd9 G Riff 1
Well, I have been swimmin' the seven sad seas,
Fair [G]women have [Em7]thrown me their [Dsus2]lifelines,
And I [Dsus4/A]just pulled them [G5/B]in to the [Cadd9]water's dark [G5/B]grin,
I'd have [Dsus4/A]warned 'em but [G5/B]I didn't [Cadd9]know.
[Cadd9] [G5/B] [A7sus4] [G]

G Em7 Cadd9 G Riff 1
Well, I've cried me a river, I've cried me a lake,
G Em7 Cadd9 G Riff 1
Hell, I cried 'til the past nearly drowned me.
G Em7 Cadd9 G Riff 1
Tears for sad consequence, tears for mistakes,
But [G]never these [Em7]tears that sur[Dsus2]round me.
[Dsus4/A]Alone in this [G5/B]place with a [Cadd9]lifetime to [G5/B]trace,
And a [Dsus4/A]heartbeat that [G5/B]tells me it's [Cadd9]so.
Oh, and I've got these [G]tears from a [Cadd9]long time a[G]go,
[Cadd9]These are [G]tears from a [Cadd9]long time a[G]go,
and [Cadd9]I need to [G]cry [D]thirty [Dsus4]years [D]or [Em7]so,
[G]These are [Cadd9]tears from a [D]long [Dsus4]time [G]ago,
These are [Cadd9]tears from a [D]long [Dsus4]time [G]ago,
I've got these [Cadd9]tears from a [D]long [Dsus4]time [G]ago.
