From a Balance Beam Bright Eyes
In no way did I write this. I found it on xguitar.com, and its much more accurate than
the other chords on this site. This is one of my favorite Bright Eyes songs. I was
bummed they didnt play it when I went to see em last month. Enjoy.
[D]There is a man holding a megaphone, so he [A]must have been the voice of God.
The bystand[D7]ers claimed they saw angels flying u[G]p and down the block.
Gm(300230)
Well, they must have been attached to wires. I saw one laying in
the [Bm]lawn with a br[A]oken arm,
so I called[A] 911. So that is one l[D]ess founded opinion. One more [A]cause for a dispute.
So the s[D7]treet filled, like a basin, up with c[G]ameras and their crews
and they [Gm]washed away the rumors leaving j[Bm]ust the concrete truth. It was a s[A]pectacle.
No, I mean a [A]miracle. So then I [D]fell like that girl from a b[A]alance beam.
A gym[D7]nasium of eyes were all ho[G]lding on to me. I lifted one foo[Gm]t to cross the other
and I f[Bm]elt myself slipping. It was a s[A]mall mistake. Sometimes that is [A]all it takes.
[Bm] Now I'm staring at my wr[G]ist, hoping that the timing is r[A]ight. When the
planes w[D]ill align.
There will be no planets to [G]align. Just the carcass of the[Gm] sun
and those little painted m[Gm]arbles spinning endless through an endless black sky.
[D] [D] [D] [D]
It was in a f[D]oreign hotel's bathtub I bapt[A]ized myself in change.
And [D7]one by one I drowned all of the p[G]eople I had been.
I em[Gm]erged to find the parallels were [Bm]fewer. I was cleansed. I looked [A]in the mirror
and someone [A]new was there. Still, I was as h[D]elpless as a chess piece
when I was lifted[A] up by someone's hand and de[D7]livered from the corner my
enemi[G]es had got me in.
But in [Gm]all of my salvation I still [Bm]felt imprisoned inside that ho[A]lding cell
that is [A]myself.
So I w[D]ait for the day when I'll h[A]ear the key as it [D7]turns in the lock
and the [G]guard will say to me, "Oh my patient prisoner you have waited for
this day[Bm]
and finally you are f[A]ree! You are free! You are[A] freezing."
[Bm] Now I'm staring at the su[G]n, waiting for it to ex[A]plode. Because a day is
gonna c[D]ome,
don't know when but it will [G]come and then we will finally know the[Gm] way out of here.
[Gm]And I will throw away this wrinkled map and my chart of stars and compass, cracked.
And I'll climb out that tree all wet with sap to avoid the hungry beasts below.
I'll cut out my love's tongue and sing of a graveyard gray and a garden green and
then we won't have to worry no more. No we won't ever worry again abouthow this song
or story ends about how this song and story will end.
