WE'VE LOST OUR WAY - My Vitriol
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is one of the songs from MV's upcoming release, as yet untitled. Enjoy!
1/4 Step Down Tuning
The instruments in this song are tuned to the older International Standard
pitch, which is A4=435Hz, rather than the American standard of 440Hz.
A4 is the pitch of your open A string.
To get in tune with the recording, I had to tune down by a quarter step,
such that my tuner says I'm very sharp for an Eb tuning, but very flat for
standard E.
A good way to tune to the song is to pick out a prominent lead guitar note
and try to match it by tuning one string. Then, tune the rest of the guitar
to that string.
If you can't tune by ear, find a chromatic tuner and set A to 435Hz instead
of 440Hz, then tune your guitar. A lot of software these days has a "tone
generator" function included (Cool Edit, Audacity). Try it.
piano intro (arranged for guitar)
e|--1-----1-----6-----6-------------6-----6----------| B|--2-----4-----6-----9--------4----6-----9----------| Rhythm guitar vamps G|--3-----1-----6-----6----3---3----6-----6----------| Bbmin and then F# D|--3-----3-----8-----8----4---4----8-----8----------| under this. A|-(1)---(1)---(6)---(6)---4---2---(6)---(6)---------| E|-------------------------2-------------------------|
You'll probably need good sustain to make it seem more piano-like; try a
compressor.
For the next bit, your guess is as good as mine. There's some sort of
pitchshifter effect on the bass guitar, playing a descending glissando.
The synth/rhythm guitar is ascending between 2-3 chords, and the lead
guitar is playing the skronky punctuation to the phrase. Getting it to
sound like the recording with one guitar should be difficult. If you have
anything to add, drop me a line.
main guitar riff (lead)
e|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| B|----------9-9-----------9-9--------------------------------------------| G|--------------10--10-10-----10-10-10--10-8----8-8-8--8-8---------------| D|-8~~~-8-8----------------------------------11------------10-11-10------| A|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| E|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| e|-------8-8---8-8-------------------------------------------------------| B|-----------9-----9-9-9--9-------------------9-9------------------------| G|--------------------------11-10-11-11-11-11----------------------------| D|-11~~~------------------------------------------8~~~~~~~---------------| A|-----------------------------------------------------------------------| E|-----------------------------------------------------------------------|
At this point, lead guitar dissolves into a haze of wah pedal manipulation.
I don't own a wah at this time, but I'd imagine if you experiment and rock
the pedal up and down while playing in the same chord shape, you should
come pretty close.
Rhythm guitar again vamps Bbmin and F# out. The chorus is 4 chords --
Bbmin x13321
[F#] [244322]
[Ab]D#m7 [466544]x68676
-- with some subtle variations on the last chord thrown in.
