Mystery  Indigo Girls

MYSTERY (Emily Saliers)

 -----------------------

[The chords written down here are Amy's, more or less. She plays either
a 12-string or high-strung guitar (which is basically a 12-string with the
bigger strings removed). Some fingerings are at the end.]
[Emily's guitar is tuned DADGAD, so most of her chords actually have A and
D notes in them: G becomes G(9), A becomes A7sus4, Em becomes Em7(4), etc.
Buy the _Swamp_Ophelia_ songbook if you want Emily's chord fingerings.]
[Eacb cbord, or pair of cbords joined by bypbens, is one 6/8 measure.]
[Dmaj9] [intro] [G] ([D]Han[-]ded [Dsus4]down or [D]made[-] by [Dsus9]hand)[Dmaj9] [G] [D] [-] [Gm] [D]
[Dmaj9]Each time you'd pull down the [G]driveway
I wasn't sure [D]when I[-] would [Dsus4]see you ag[D]ain
Yours was a [Em7]twisted, blind-sided high[G]way[-] [A7sus4]
No matter which [D]road yo[-]u took [Gm]then[D]
Oh you [Dmaj9]set up your place in my tho[G]ughts
Moved in and made my [D]thinki[-]ng crow[Dsus4]ded[D]
Now we're out in the b[Em7]ack with the barking dogs[D/F#]
My heart the red [G]sun, your heart the moon [A7sus4]clouded[A7]
I could go [G]crazy on a night like to[A]night
When summer's begin[D]ning[-] to g[D/C#]ive up her [Gmaj7/B]fight
And every thoug[G]ht's a possibility[A]
And voices are [D]heard,[-] but [D/C#]nothing is [D7/C]seen
Why do you [G]spend this time with me[A]
May be an [G]equ[-]al [A]mystery[D] [-] [Dsus4] [D]
So what is love then
Is it dictated or chosen (handed down or made by hand)
Does it sing like the hymns of a thousand years
Or is it just pop emotion (handed down or made by hand)
And if it ever was there, and it left
Does it mean it was never true
And to exist it must elude
Is that why I think these things of you
But I could go crazy on a night like tonight
When summer's beginning to give up her fight
And every thought's a possibility
And voices are heard, but nothing is seen
Why do you spend this time with me
May be an equal mystery
Oh, but you like the [C9]taste of danger
It [C9]shines like sugar o[D]n yo[-]ur l[Dsus4]ips[D]
And you like to st[C9]and in the line of fi[C9]re
Just to show y[Em7]ou can shoot straight from your [D7/C]hip
There must be a [G]thousand things you would [Gm]die for
I can [D]har[-]dly [D/C#]think of [Gmaj7/B]two
But not everything [Em7]is better spoken al[D/F#]oud
Not when I'm t[G]alking to you[A7sus4] [A7]
Oh, the [Dmaj9]pirate gets the ship and the girl to[G]night
Breaks a bottle to chr[D]iste[-]n her[Dsus4] [D]
Basking in the [Em7]exploits of her thief[G] [-] [A7sus4]
She's a very go[D]od li[-]stener[Gm] [D]
And maybe that's [Dmaj9]all that we need is to [G]meet in the middle
Of impossi[D]bil[-]ity[Dsus4] [D]
Standing at o[Em7]pposite poles
Equal [G]partner[-]s in a [A]mystery[D] [-] [Dsus4] [D]
We're standing at o[Em7]pposite poles
G - A D - Dsus4 D - Dsus4 D - Gm D.
Equal partners in a mystery
AMY'S CHORDS:
Dmaj9: x00220 G: 320033 Gm: xx0333 A7sus4: x02030
D/C#: x40232 Gmaj7/B: x20032 D7/C: x30232
C9: x32330 (actually x32333, but can _you_ play that?)
(The rest should be pretty standard.)
If you want to get that jangly 12-string kind of sound on an ordinary
6-string, put a capo at the 5th fret and transpose everything to the
key of A. Then, try using these for some of your chord fingerings:
x[Amaj9]02100 x[D(9)]00230 x07[A]650 - x[As2s4]07700 x07[A]650 - x[As2s4]07700
[intro]
x[Amaj9]02100 x[D(9)]00230 x0[A]2220 - x[Dm(9)]03230 x02[A]220
[intro]
Later in the song, the only suggestions I have are 32320x for G9,
and x02220 x02120 x00252 (A Amaj7 D(9)) instead of A A/G# Dmaj7/F#.
