You Never Even Call Me By My Name
David Allan Coe
It was [C]all that I could do to k[G]eep from cryin'[C]
Sometimes [F]it seems so useless to remain[C]
[F]You don't have to call me darlin', darl[C]in'
You never even call m[G]e by my name.[C] [G]
[C]You don't have[G] to call me Waylon [C]Jennings
And you don't have to call m[G]e Charlie Pride.[C]
And yo[F]u don't have to call me Merle Haggard, any[C]more.[Am]
Even t[D]hough your on my fightin' side.[G]
CHORUS
And I'll hang a[F]round as long as you will let me[C]
And I never minded s[G]tandin' in the rain.[C]
[F]You don't have to call me darlin'[C], darlin'
You never even call m[G]e by my name. [C] [G]
I've heard my name a few times in your phone book
I've seen it on signs where I've played
But the only time I know, I'll hear David Allan Coe
Is when Jesus has his final judgement day.

then: the spoken part below has this played in the background:
(the numbers are complete bars)

 C-2 G-4 C-2 G-2 C-1 G-1 and then C to finish out the rest.

[C]Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song
and he told me [G]it was the perfect country and western song
I wrote him back a letter and told him it was NOT the perfect
country and western song because he hadn't said [C]anything at all about
Momma, or trains, [G]or trucks, or prison, [C]or gettin' drunk.[G]
Well, he sat down [C]and wrote another verse to the song and he sent
it to me and after reading it, I realized that my friend had written
the perfect country and western song. And I felt obliged to include it
on this album. The last verse goes like this here:
Well, I was [C]drunk the day my [G]Mom got outta [C]prison.
And I went to pick her [G]up in the [C]rain.
But, [F]before I could get to the station in my [C]pickup t[Am]ruck
[D]She got runned over by a damned old [G]train.
CHORUS:
So I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin' in the rain. No,
You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never [C]even call me, I[G] wonder why[C] you don't call me[F]
Why don't [C]you ever call me by[G] my name. [F] [C] [F] [G]
