Fancy  Reba McEntire

CAPO on 2

[E////] [G////] [A////] [E////]
Well I re[E]member it all very well lookin' back
It was the [D]summer I turned eighteen
We [A]lived in a one-room, run-down shack
On the [C]outskirts of New Orleans
We [E]didn't have money for food or rent
To say the l[D]east we were hard-pressed
Then [A]Mama spent every last penny we had
To buy [C]me a dancin' dress

Well Mama [E]washed and combed and curled my hair
Then she [A]painted my eyes and l[E]ips
Then I s[E]tepped into a satin dancin' dress
That had a s[A]plit on the side clean u[E]p to my hip
[E]  It was red, velvet [A]trimmin' and it fit me [E]good
Standin' [E]back from the lookin' glass
There stood a woman where a [A]half-grown kid had s[E]tood

CHORUS:
She said [C]here's your one chance F[D]ancy don't let me [E]down
She said [G]here's your one chance F[A]ancy don't let me [E]down  (stay on E for 4)

Mama [E]dabbed a little bit of perfume on my [D]neck then she kissed my cheek
And I [A]saw the tears wellin' up in her troubled e[C]yes as she started to speak
She [E]looked at our pitiful shack
And then she looked at m[D]e and took a ragged breath
She said your [A]Pa's runned off, and I'm real sick
And the b[C]aby's gonna starve to death

She [E]handed me a heart-shaped locket that said
"To [D]thine own self be true"
And I [A]shivered as I watched a roach crawl across
the [C]toe of my high-heeled shoe
It [E]sounded like somebody else that was talkin'
Askin' [G#]Mama what do I [C#]do?
She said [A]just be nice to the gentlemen Fancy,
Th[B]ey'll be nice to you
CHORUS:
She said [C]here's your one chance F[D]ancy don't let me [E]down
H[G]ere's your one chance F[A]ancy don't let me [E]down
Lord forg[G]ive me for what I [A]do, but if y[C]ou want out
Well it's [D]up to you
Now don't [C]let me down now, yo' [B]Mama's gonna move you up[E]town (stay on E for 4)

Well [E]that was the last time I saw my Ma
The night I [D]left that rickety shack
The [A]welfare people came and took the baby
Mama [C]died and I ain't been back
But the [E]wheels of fate had started to turn
And for [D]me there was no way out
It [A]wadn't very long 'til I knew exactly
What my [C]Mama'd been talkin' about

I [E]knew what I had to do and I made my[D]self this solemn vow
That [A]I's gonna be a lady someday
Though I [C]didn't know when or how
But I [E]couldn't see spendin' the rest of my life
With my [G#]head hung down in [C#]shame
You know I [A]might have been born just plain white trash
But F[B]ancy was my name
CHORUS:
She said [C]here's your one chance F[D]ancy don't let me [E]down
She said [G]here's your one chance F[A]ancy don't leeeeeet me [E]down  (stay on E for 4)

* Guitar in next verse is played almost as percussion
* Fret-hand dampens strings, pick-hand keeps tempo

Wadn't long after a benevolent man
Took me in off the streets
One week later I was pourin' his tea
In a five-room hotel suite
I charmed a king, a congressman
And an occasional aristocrat
And then I got me a Georgia mansion
And an elegant New York townhouse flat
And I ain't done bad * Guitar comes back in...

[E////] [G////] [A////] [E////]

Now [E]in this world there's a lot of self-righteous [A]hippocrites
That call me [E]bad
And [E]criticize Mama for turning me out
No [A]matter how little we [E]had
But [E]though I ain't had to worry about nothin'
For [G#]nigh on fifteen [C#]years
I can [A]still hear the desperation in my poor
Mama's v[B]oice ringin' in my ears
She said [C]here's your one chance F[D]ancy don't let me [E]down, woah
H[G]ere's your one chance F[A]ancy don't let me [E]down
Lord forg[G]ive me for what I [A]do, but if y[C]ou want out
Well it's [D]up to you
Now don't [C]let me down hon, yo' [B]Mama's gonna move you up[E]town
Oh And I guess she d[E]id...
[E////] [G////] [A////] [E////]
(repeat to end)
