Cry Cry Cry  Marty Stuart

"CRY CRY CRY" by Johnny Cash, as performed by Marty Stuart.
======================================================================================
This song features the Scruggs tuner, or Keith tuner, on the low E-string. Marty
has a set of them on Clarence, the Fender Telecaster which was given to him by the
widow of the late Clarence White. This is the same Tele that featured the first
B-bender ever, invented by Mr White.
In case you don't know, Scruggs tuners are tuning pegs with which you can very
easily detune a string to a pre-determined pitch. They were invented by Earl Scruggs,
(DUH!!) so he could easily switch from a G-tuning to a D-tuning and back on a banjo.
Guitarist liked this idea too and started modifying them so low E strings fit through
them and put them on guitars. And before long guitarist were actually de- and re-
tuning their guitars in the middle of songs, as is the case in this song, as opposed
to retuning between songs, what the original idea was.
Fender calls it the "Custom Artist Series", you know, the signature guitars of
people who are really dead (Danny Gatton, Waylon Jennings, SRV and Albert Collins),
and therefore do not have to be paid. Anyways, here you can find guitars that feature
the Scruggs tuners (the Clarence White Telecaster, the Waylon Jennings Telecaster, and
I believe the Marty Stuart Telecaster has 'm too).
You can also buy Scruggs tuners online, new, but they're like $100,= a piece, which
is obviously ludicrous, but a better option than spending $3500,= dollars on a new
guitar. Another option is the Hipshot D-tuner, which you can get from Stew Mac. This
thing works with a lever and is perfect for a quick dropped D between songs, but is a
little less practical during a song, mainly because the way it is designed causes the
pitch of the string to be raised a little before it is lowered. Costs about $50.=.
(By the way, for some great guitarplaying that includes extensive use of the
Scruggs tuner, check out a dude named Adrian Legg.)
(*note: since the lyrics and chords are already transcribed, I haven't bothered...)
